Our internal team is made up of a diverse group of professionals with a wide range of expertise in nonprofit management, financial management, fund and donor development, economic development, program development, marketing, public relations, program evaluation, event management, and more.

Together, we aim to provide grant making, scholarship, leadership, and community investment programs and services of the highest quality to serve the citizens of Barberton.

Jim Stonkus, President & CEO

“Barberton isn’t just my hometown, it’s my passion.” Jim is a 1978 graduate of Barberton High School and a member of the Barberton High School Academic Hall of Fame. He has a degree in Natural Science (pre-med) from the University of Akron, and an MBA from Baldwin-Wallace College.

Jim has spent 28 years in the healthcare industry, including 12 years as the Regional Vice President of Business Development for the Southwest region of Summa Health System, a position that was based in Barberton. He has tremendous experience as a community liaison and organizer, working with community leaders to develop shovel-ready projects designed to grow, improve, and develop the community.

In addition to his extensive work experience and education, Jim has devoted much of his professional life to various community organizations, including: Tuscora Park Health & Wellness Foundation, Barberton Community Development Corporation, American College of Healthcare Executives, Barberton Community Health Clinic, Magic City Kiwanis, and the South Summit Chamber of Commerce.

Janice Brennan, Chief Financial Officer

Janice joined the Foundation in April 2013 and is responsible for all things financial related to the Foundation in addition to taking on the human resource responsibilities. Janice previously worked for eight years at a local public accounting firm, BCG & Company, as a supervisor in the assurance services department. At BCG & Company, Janice was also very involved with the non-profit practice group and worked with a number of area non-profits. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Kent State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

While at Kent State University, Janice was an active member of the Accounting Association, Beta Alpha Psi & Alpha Phi Fraternity. Janice is currently involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit & Medina Counties and currently holds the role of Treasurer on the Board of Directors. She has also served as chair of the organization’s annual Grapes for Kids’ Sake fundraiser. Locally, Janice is a member of the Rotary Club of Barberton and a current board member of Neighborhood Conservation Services of Barberton (N.C.S.).

Janice enjoys spending time on a golf course or hiking the towpath trail with the her dog. Janice also enjoys painting, cooking, relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine on any occasion.

Debora Rolland, Vice President of Community Impact

Debby joined the team in December 2012 and manages the grant and scholarship programs for the Barberton Community Foundation. Her responsibilities include overseeing grants and scholarships for the Foundation and working with the Youth Philanthropy Committee (YPC). This mentoring initiative works to build the next generation of leaders in the community, one individual at a time.

Debby joined us from the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition with over 13 years of experience in the non-profit industry. She was Vice President of Operations & Development for the regional non-profit working on the development of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail. Debby has extensive experience in fundraising, development and grant making where she helped administer a trail and greenspace grant program for Summit County and its communities awarding over $1.5 million dollars for projects connecting communities to the Towpath Trail. Debby attended Kent State University and Walsh University where she majored in business/management.

Debby’s community involvement includes a board member of Barberton Kiwanis, board member of the Summit County Arts & Culture Board and has included City of Hudson Park Board, CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocate and a board member of Earth Share of Ohio. During her time away from the Foundation, she enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors and running on the Towpath Trail.

Amber Genet, Director of Marketing & Communications

Amber joined the team in September 2015 and has overall responsibility for the Foundation’s marketing strategy, including social media presence, brand management and communication functions.

She joins BCF from Westfield Insurance, where she served as a corporate event planner coordinating event logistics, communication, design and execution. Combined with other postilions held, including her first job with the Barberton Park and Recreation Department, she brings 15 years of communication and event experience to her new position with the Barberton Community Foundation.

Amber earned her graduate degree in Communications and her undergraduate degree in Public Relations & Business Communication from The University of Akron.

She is a board member at United Disability Services Akron, Association of Fundraising Professionals Northeast Ohio Chapter (AFP), Past-President of Downtown Akron Partnership Emerging Leaders. She is a graduate of Torchbearers Class of 2010 and Barberton Community Leadership Institute Class 2. Additionally, she is a member of the South Summit Chamber of Commerce and United Way Young Leaders. Amber also serves on multiple event committees and is a member of local organizations throughout Northeast Ohio.

Christy Melert, Administrative Assistant

Christy joined our team in May 2014. Her warm smile, cheerful personality and positive, caring attitude makes her the perfect fit for our team. She is a 1996 graduate of Barberton High School and is proud to call Barberton her hometown.

Prior to joining BCF, Christy spent 13 years helping those in need at Portage Path Behavioral Health – Barberton Clinic, where she was the Customer Service Team Leader, but better known as the “office goddess.” Helping others comes naturally to her and she is always willing to go the extra mile. “Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after having an experience with you becomes your trademark.” – Jay Danzie

Frequently you will find Christy around town supporting community events with her mom Carol. When she is not busy spreading Barberton pride, Christy loves to spend time with her family, especially her husband Matt and their dog Daisy. Christy also enjoys traveling, shopping and cooking, often finding new recipes to try through Pinterest.
