Magic City Kiwanis/Esther Ryan Endowment Shoe Fund

Ray E. Leach

Esther Ryan is remembered by this community for her compassion and her career as a nurse at Barberton City Schools. After witnessing children coming to school with inadequate footwear, she took it upon herself to provide shoes to the students through a charity run out of the trunk of her car. She eventually partnered the Esther Ryan Shoe Fund with the Magic City Kiwanis, which continues her effort.

The Magics Ready to Learn Fund grew out of an initiative by seven women: Paula Kallio, Kathy Maybin, Kathy Harnden, Kim Liddle, Bethany McKenney, Mary Lou Woodford and Tayler Thompson, to help provide school supplies to Barberton students.

In the summer of 2022, their campaign “We are All Magics” successfully raised $30,000 to supply 1500 students in K-5 grade with their complete back to school supply list. Paula Kallio and Kathy Maybin established the fund after the success of the campaign to grow their efforts in 2023 and beyond.
